For the collective/general use of the term, refer to Demonkind
Demons form the majority of the population of demonkind, and are usually what people refer to when talking about demons, they are distinguished by the presence of wings, and an ability to fly, despite having a body quite dense for flight like other winged races.

Physiology

Demons are almost identical to humans in their biology, including in the lifespan, exception made for certain traits, which are divided in two groups: major traits and minor traits, the colour of some of the traits is usually the same for all the traits, and are passed down genetically.

Anatomical chart showcasing some of the anatomy of a demon

Major traits

  • Horns: hard keratin growths from the head, most commonly from the forehead, that vary in shape and colour, at times mimicking the shape of animal horns, they do not regrow, and have little blood vessels in them, but do contain nerve endings.
  • Wings: limbs that sprout from between the shoulder blades of the demon, and span typically 2.80m each side on the average demon, as they’re usually proportionate to the height, they are similar in structure to the wings of a bat, due to them, demons can fly, albeit with limitations
  • Tail: a thin, spade-tipped tail protruding from the sacrum, on males, the tip is accompanied by two smaller “spikes”, while female demons lack the trait

Minor traits

  • Claws: on the last phalanx of a demon’s finger grows a spike of hard keratin scales, sharp like claws observed in animals, the claws tend to be the same colour as the horns, as they’re made from the same material
  • Pointed ears: demons have short, but pointed ears, they lack the muscle to move them properly like other pointy-eared races
  • Fangs: notably sharp teeth, the usage or origin is unknown, as demons aren’t exclusively carnivorous
  • Vertical pupils: not unlike cats, they grant excellent vision in dark conditions

Development

Demons have a lifespan akin to the one of humans, fully maturing around the 18-20 years of age.
Demons are born with all their traits, but are noticeably smaller at birth, specifically:

  • The horns are smaller and rounder, and do not reach their full length and shape until adulthood
  • The wings are small, because of this the demon can’t fly until adulthood, only glide
  • The tail is longer proportionally to the body, and the tip is rounder
  • The claws get sharper with age until adulthood

Half demons

As any humanoid race, demons can breed with all other humanoid race, the offspring will usually look like as if it was an half human, but also inheriting 2 major traits and 2-3 minor traits from the demon parent, some half demons seem to never develop their demonic traits properly, leading to having short stubby horns, ingrown wings or a disproportionate tail in adulthood.

Angelic half demons

Offspring of a fallen angel and a human results in a particular case of half demon, where the offspring has all three major traits, but only 2-3 minor traits, other than being a demigod due to being born after the Flattening.

Tiefling demons

A Tiefling demon appears as if they were a human tiefling, but with wings, occasionally tiefling demons have a double pair of horns.

Origin

Demons are the product of a fallen angel and a human, it’s theorised that there might have been demons before, but the most agreed on event of the origin of demons is subsequent to the Great Fall, but very different from the current form, as a result of being demigods, as they had more animal-like traits, it wasn’t until the Flattening that fallen angel-born demons, and all demigod demons were flattened into the form they have now.

Spread

Demons are mostly found in the Eastern continent, where they make out the majority of the population of the Demon Empire.

Racial discrimination

As with many other demonic races, demons are heavily discriminated against for their infernal-like traits, that people commonly associate with devils and creatures from the infernal plane, leading to religious-based discriminations against them, some of which were also basis of propaganda from the Human Kingdom during the demon-human Wars, supposedly to make soldiers more comfortable about killing a demon to recruit more people.
The angelic origin of the demons is unknown to both non-demon and demon races.
